BIOPHILIAC: Resisting the Rabbit Hole of Consumption

A surrealist study of ecology, impermanence, and creative renewal

“One impulse from a vernal wood
May teach you more of man,
Of moral evil and of good,
Than all the sages can.”

William Wordsworth

BIOPHILIAC: Resisting the Rabbit Hole of Consumption is a surrealist photographic series and forthcoming book exploring permaculture, regenerative agriculture, overconsumption, ecological connection, personal transformation, and how art can cultivate environmental awareness. Created in-camera using long exposure, light painting, ambient light, and non-extractive materials—often sourced from the artist’s suburban permaculture food forest—the project blends experimental photography with sustainable practice. Images range from surreal portraits to symbolic still lifes composed of natural elements, inviting reflection on our relationship with the Absolute.

Jamie Solorio began developing BIOPHILIAC: Resisting the Rabbit Hole of Consumption to document her shift away from commercial photography toward a slower, more intentional approach. The book will include approximately 165 images, both full-page works and visual sequences. A short preface will outline her creative and ecological transformation during the pandemic. The book’s production will prioritize low impact materials and processes aligned with the project’s ethos.

With over a decade of professional photography experience, Solorio will lead the project and collaborate with a small team as needed to realize her vision. Phase 1 (August 2025–August 2026) will focus on producing 50–70 new images, organizing existing work, and developing a preliminary book layout. This phase culminates in a planned collaborative exhibition and public artist talk on Summer 2026, at Old City Hall Gallery in Redding, CA, featuring Solorio and local environmental artists.

The project continues with plans to publish the book and donate a portion of sales to regenerative causes. A dedicated section on her website will share process notes and reflections to inspire others. BIOPHILIAC: Resisting the Rabbit Hole of Consumption fosters ecological connection through ethical image-making and community engagement.

“This work began as a response to a major shift in my life—away from the pace of commercial photography and toward something slower, more intentional, and deeply rooted in observation. The pandemic, permaculture, and a sense of longing for reconnection all played a role. Inspired by Elizaveta Porodina’s UnMasked, and shaped by years of quiet reflection, BIOPHILIAC: Resisting the Rabbit Hole of Consumption is as much about process as it is about images.”-Jamie Solorio
