Arcimboldo Permaculture Series

"Arcimboldo Permaculture" collection is a visual homage to pre-industrial harmony between humans and nature, invoking the aesthetic of Renaissance painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo 1563 painting "La Primavera" with a focus on sustainable permaculture practices.

The series opens with "We Are Watching," a statement about the observer's role in the natural world, featuring model Aurora adorned with USDA Zone 9b plant elements to highlight human responsibility in local environmental stewardship. The white peony is reminiscent of Arcimboldo’s subjects collar does more than pay homage to the artistic style; it symbolizes purity, beauty, and the cycle of renewal—themes central to both the painting and permaculture. In permaculture, design choices serve multiple purposes that contribute to the health of the whole system. The subject's serene yet penetrating gaze challenges viewers to consider their impact on the environment, implicitly asking whether we are spectators, guardians, or destroyers of our planet's delicate ecosystems.

"Blurred Iris" is the second image in "Arcimboldo Permaculture" series. This photograph features the image of an iris, its details intentionally obscured to symbolize the current environmental uncertainties facing our planet.

In "The Rabbit Hole of Consumption," a spiraling form conveys the dangerous cycle of overconsumption, suggesting a descent into a disordered state which stands in stark contrast to the sustainable cycle promoted by permaculture.

"The Witness" the 4th image, the subject possesses a melancholic Botticelli-esque beauty, her dark eyes brimming with a sorrowful awareness of the ongoing environmental crises. Her somber expression is emblematic of a deep-seated concern for the state of the natural world, challenging viewers to recognize the emotional gravity of ecological neglect.

"Permaculture's Promise" exudes a sense of hope and fertility, embodying the principles of permaculture. Aurora’s eyes, reverse-solarized to stand out brightly against the darker surroundings, symbolize the clarity and optimism that permaculture's sustainable practices promise. Her pose and expression, infused with a serene confidence, suggest a harmonious balance with the surrounding environment.

Solorio employs the Sabatier effect to signify a change in perception, aligning with the transformative potential of permaculture. This artistic choice underlines the theme of renewal and the opportunity for a shift towards environmental consciousness.

"Amber Reflections" invites viewers to ponder the delicate balance between human intervention and natural processes, suggesting a symbiotic relationship that can flourish with mindful practices.

The 7th image, "Renewal in Bloom" features Shelbie, my adorable silkie hen, alongside my niece, Aurora whose appearance recalls the ethereal beauty of Botticelli's figures to me. Central to the composition is a hand-wrapped copper wire egg, cradled among fresh blossoms, symbolizing new beginnings and the perpetual cycle of renewal inherent in nature. The juxtaposition of the delicate blossoms and the metallic texture of the egg emphasizes the synthesis of natural and crafted elements, reflecting the principles of permaculture where human creativity harmonizes with nature's processes.

"Prismatic Perspectives" this image uniquely captures the essence of light and reflection by utilizing a prism, creating a view that symbolizes the ways we perceive and impact our natural world. The use of the prism to refract light across the scene suggesting that every angle and every color shift matters in our understanding and appreciation of the world around us.

"Silkie Shelby" this image focuses on Shelby, the silkie hen. In the frame she is placed on a bed of beautiful Zone 9B flora and a gentle presence of farm animals. By centering Shelby within the frame, the photograph elevates her from the typical role of agricultural utility to that of a being worthy of admiration and respect.

"Divided Harmony" this image explores the dualities and balances inherent in our relationship with nature. The use of the orange gel encourages viewers to reflect on the delicate equilibrium required to sustain both our needs and the planet's health, emphasizing the need for thoughtful, balanced approaches in our ecological practices.

"Vigil for Change" this image captures a moment of reflective observation, portraying a figure poised in contemplation of the evolving environmental landscape. A trompe l'oeil which suggests a vast landscape overseen by the humans discerning eye.

The "Arcimboldo Permaculture" series presents a straightforward case for a paradigm shift towards an integrated, respectful relationship with the planet, encapsulated in a series of interconnected photographic works.

Currently working on imagery for my art book BIOPHILIAC: Resisting the Rabbit Hole, this image was created with non-extractive materials obtained through my garden and a low impact intention, as glue was the only item purchased.
