Lone Wolf in Burnt Forest

Can the beast of toxic individualism be tamed?

We venture into the fire-ravaged landscape of Northern California to glimpse the future of sustainable fashion.

Location: Redding, CA, burn scar from 2018 Carr Fire Disaster

Interestingly enough we took these editorial photographs very close to where the fire tornados were in Redding, California during the Carr Fire and in the background you can see smoke. This is real smoke, but from another fire nearby. I have lived in Redding for 44 years now, and have never seen fire seasons that I can remember like we have been having in the last few years. It concerns me, even though I know my 44 years are a nano-second in the scheme of time. If I recall correctly, aren’t we supposed to be good stewards to our planet???

For the last several years I have been pretty, I dare might say, OBSESSED with the way most humans are treating this gift of a planet, INCLUDING myself. So, now I try my best to not buy fast fashion and IF I do purchase something new, I research it.

What do I research?

I check to see if the company is being ethical to their employees, to see if they our a sustainable company, to see if I am purchasing synthetic fibers or natural fibers to begin. It is TIME consuming, more so that I would have ever imagined. Hopefully one day enough consumers will help change our current situation with more educated decisions based on more than a fast greedy solution for ourselves with a few minutes of research for our future generations in mind. I kinda feel like we need a paradigm shift of what is really important, but that is my just my opinion.

In this shoot Robin, my model is wearing my favorite pants by Buddha Pants that I pretty much live in! So comfortable, ethical, sustainable and organic! Another one of the used pieces were my sunglasses which again took some time to find. Eyewear for People Who Care: 33% less CO2e Emissions, 34% less water usage, and 82% less waste compared to conventional sunglasses and packaging. UHhhhh….yes! I mention these two pieces since I already spent the time and effort trying to find products that are eco-conscious and want to save you the trouble.

Styling by the ever so talented Robin Fator Creative along with makeup and hair, and she was the model. Creative Direction was mostly Robin, with a few eco ideas pushed in there by me. It is always fun to create On-Location Environmental shoots with off-camera lighting with beautiful people inside and out.
